Those planning a major DIY project should seek advice before starting, one home insurance firm has warned.
Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance for Direct Line, explained that while some insurers offer accidental damage cover for DIY mishaps, major work should not be conducted without first seeking advice.
He said: "We recommend that professional advice is sought before undertaking any major DIY work."
This could include things such as knocking down walls, or fitting a new kitchen or bathrooms, Mr Lowe added.
Figures published by UK home insurance company Zurich reveal that UK homeowners have paid out more than £1.5 billion to correct DIY jobs that have gone wrong.
It also found that 47 per cent of people do not inform their home insurance company before starting on a major DIY project.
Halifax Home Insurance have also issued a similar warning, pointing out that if an unqualified person causes a fire through faulty wiring then they might find that their policy holder refuses to pay out.
