With a hotter than average summer in prospect people need to make sure their home insurance covers subsidence, it has been claimed.
According to Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, warm weather can cause the ground beneath a property to dry up and become unstable, possibly leading to damage.
He said: "Any cracks wider than your thumb however could mean there is subsidence. In this case you should alert your insurer immediately so they can assess the situation."
If people let their home insurance company know that they their house could be suffering from subsidence the firm will make regular inspections to assess the situation, he added.
After this, options such as underpinning could be investigated in an attempt to save the problem, Mr Gerrard explained.
Yesterday, Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance, at Direct Line warned people to make sure that their policies cover them against accidental damage to their belongings.
