Home insurance warning over buildings

Wed, 18 Jun 2008

After Jade Goody fell victim to robbers for the third time, the former reality TV star should serve as a warning to home insurance customers, one firm has warned.

Gideon Ingham, head of insurance for ASDA, explains that it has been rumoured that Ms Goody left £56,000 of jewellery on display, near an open window .

If this is true then she would not be covered by the vast majority of insurance policies, he warned.

Mr Ingham said: "Many households across the country will have at least a few precious items of jewellery and family heirlooms in their possession... These can be worth several thousand pounds and we urge people to keep their valuables out of sight and preferably locked in a safe."

Steps such a installing an alarm not only help makes items more secure, but can also lower home insurance premiums, he added.

People should also make sure that they have adequate cover for all valuable items in their home, Mr Ingham stated.

Yesterday, Simon Lamble, product director at Confused.com, warned people to make sure that their home insurance policy covers outbuildings such as sheds .
