Those planning a holiday must make sure not to advertise their house to thieves while they are away, one home insurance company has warned.
Simon Lamble, product director for insurance comparison website, recommended people tell their neighbours that they are going away and this will encourage them to be vigilant while the householder is on holiday.
However, people must make sure to check their home insurance policy to see if it will cover the property while they are away.
Mr Lamble said: Before leaving to go on a lengthy holiday, it is wise to check the terms of the policy to make sure that the level of cover is sufficient. If there is any doubt, the insurance company should be contacted.
By doing so people will be able to arrange extra cover if needed or find out if there are extra security measures which can be implemented to ensure the home insurance policy is valid.
Yesterday, Gideon Ingham, head of insurance for ASDA, warned people they should keep any valuables they might own out of sight and locked away if possible.
