Home insurance comparison websites might not offer the kind of service customers expect, a new report has warned.
According to Defaqto's sixth annual home insurance report, such websites do not offer "whole of market" coverage, despite what some of them imply.
Only a few of the services allow people to compare home insurance policies on anything other than price, it adds.
Mike Powell, Defaqto's general insurance consultant, said: "The home insurance aggregation market is no where near as developed as the car insurance market.
"For the consumer, it appears that there are a number of sites available, but our research into this market has left us with the opinion that there are only five true aggregator sites."
People who choose to use such sites to obtain their home insurance should check exactly what level of cover they are getting, he added.
Last week, Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, advised people in flood-prone areas to invest in defences to help protect against such incidents as doing this will help them get home insurance cover .
