Shopping around leads to cheaper home insurance, figures reveal

Fri, 18 Jul 2008

Not shopping around cost home insurance customers £9.3 billion in the first half of this year, research shows.

A study by Confused.com found that the average home insurance saving for someone using the site was £193.81, whether they were changing provider altogether or just looking to renew at a lower rate.

Simon Lamble, product director at Confused.com, explained that loyalty rarely pays for home insurance customers.

He said: "Although many customers stick with a specific provider, as a result of being happy with the service which they provide, it is always worth checking if you can get the same service at a reduced cost."

People should also find that the renewal quote falls each year unless they have had to claim on their home insurance, he added.

Yesterday, John Kenny, chief claims manager at NFU Mutual, advised people who live in flood-prone areas to keep their home insurance documents in a safe place in case they need to make a claim .
