Properties with no security measures are ten times more likely to be burgled than those with simple precautions, according to one home insurance firm .
Simon Lamble, product director at insurance comparison website Confused.com, warned that while the number of break-ins did not increase hugely in the last year, this is no reason to become complacent.
He said: Despite the fact that 2.4 per cent of households still experience one or more burglaries every year, home contents insurance is not a legal requirement. However, it should be considered an absolute necessity.
People should make sure that they shop around for their home insurance to get the best possible deal they can, he added.
Mr Lamble was commenting after the British Crime Survey showed that there are 729,000 burglaries taking place each year.
Yesterday, Tescocompare.com warned parents to make sure that they have accidental damage cover included in their home insurance as kids cause 1.1 million household incidents each year.
