The real cost of losing a handbag could be much more than women expect, one home insurance company has warned.
According to research by Sheilas' Wheels home insurance, two-thirds of women carry round at least one item which puts them at risk of identity theft .
The home insurance firm points out that, as such crime now costs the UK £1.7 billion a year, having a handbag stolen could end up costing more than the average value of the item and its contents, estimated to be £290.
Jacky Brown, spokesperson for Sheilas' Wheels home insurance, said: "Ridding bags of items such as old utility bills, post and cheque books could reduce the risk of having your identity stolen if your handbag is snatched."
Yesterday, research by Zurich Private Clients found that one in ten people with a holiday property do not have home insurance for it and a further 11 per cent do not know if they have adequate cover.
