Installing flood defences can help people in areas prone to such incidents get home insurance, according to one industry body.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, explains that if people are in very flood prone areas they might not be able to get home insurance at all.
However, by adding defences people will find that home insurance companies treat them more fairly.
Mr Trudgill said: "We have a scheme that our brokers sell for people in those flood prone areas and if they do fit those defences then it means that they can get insurance ."
If they do not make a claim for a couple of years people will find that their home insurance premiums "should be very fair", he added.
According to data released by the Association of British Insurers home insurance firms paid out more than £3 billion following last summer's floods .
