Home insurance warning over security measures

Thu, 03 Jul 2008

More than one in ten people do not lock their doors when they go out, new research shows - something that means their home insurance firm might not pay out if they are burgled.

The study, conducted by Newcastle Building Society, reveals that while people are aware that fitting things such as extra locks and alarms cut their home insurance policy, people often do not make use of them.

Steven Marks, lending executive at Newcastle Building Society, advised homeowners to lock their doors and set their alarm as it not only reduces the risk of burglary but also means they are less likely to have their home insurance claim rejected if something does happen.

He said: "While it is encouraging to see that many people are aware of the measures to take to reduce their home contents insurance bill, it is worrying to see the number of people who admit to forgetful acts over a year."

Yesterday, Vicky Emmott, senior technical claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance, advised newlyweds to make sure their policy covers the cost of any gifts they received on the big day.
