Cyclists should make sure that their bike is safe when stored at their property, one home insurance firm has warned.
Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, explained that 16 per cent of bicycle thefts occur from people's homes .
He explained that bikes are a popular target for thieves as they are easy to re-sell.
Mr Laird said: "It's important cyclists consider their bike security at home as well as away and ensure they have insurance against theft."
People should budget for their added home insurance cover when buying the bike in the first place, Mr Laird stated.
Cyclists should also make sure they purchase equipment such as a padlock to secure their ride, he added.
Yesterday, the Financial Mail reported that people's home insurance policies might not cover material they have downloaded on to their computer .
For this reason people should check with their insurance companies to clarify what they can claim for, the newspaper warned.
