People living in areas prone to flooding must make sure they have a good house insurance policy in place.
That is the message from moneysupermarket.com.
Richard Mason, director of insurance for the company, said: "Households that are at risk must have good-quality home insurance for their contents . Doing so ensures they will continue to be covered regardless of what happens in future."
He added that after the floods last year people without home insurance realised that they could not do without cover and that, because of this, moneysupermarket.com had seen a 300 per cent increase in house insurance applications.
Mr Mason said that, according to the Environment Agency, there are about 2.3 million homes built on flood plains.
He also said that there could be over 900,000 homes in flood-risk areas that did not have home insurance.
Widespread flooding hit the UK in June and July of last year.
At the time the Association of British Insurers said that it expected the cost of the floods to be at least £2 billion.
