Recent bad weather could see a large number of people making claims on their house insurance, according to one expert.
However, Lloyd Wilson, head of Abbey home insurance product development said that the risk of damage caused by bad weather made it even more important that people had house insurance in place.
Mr Wilson said: "Our research shows that the risk of damage to our homes is an ever increasing reality and we need to prepare for it. The British weather is highly unpredictable but we can all ensure that, should the worst happen, we are correctly insured."
A survey carried out by Abbey found that 11 per cent of British homes had been damaged by the weather in the last five years.
It also found that the average cost of the damage is £2,699.
Large parts of the UK were hit by flooding last week following heavy rain.
