Anyone who fails to take out house insurance is putting their home "at real risk", one expert believes.
Charlotte Sjoberg, campaigns manager for Nationwide, said: "Having building insurance in particular is incredibly important as it covers things like fire, vandalism, storms and floods ."
She added that it was important that people were prepared for the unexpected and that having house insurance in place was part of this.
Ms Sjoberg also explained that it was important to have both building and contents insurance in place as this would ensure that both the property and a person's belongs were covered in the event of a disaster.
And, she went on to say, people should check that they have enough cover in place.
Research conducted by the building society found that one in five people do not have buildings insurance . It also found that 14 per cent of people do not have contents insurance.
Anyone with a mortgage is obliged to take out building insurance but the Citizen's Advice Bureau advises that all home owners take out a policy.
