Owners of listed buildings warned over home insurance

Mon, 04 Feb 2008

Anyone who lives in a listed building needs specialist home insurance, one industry body has warned.

NFU Mutual said that people with listed properties sometimes did not have adequate home insurance due to the age and "specialist nature" of their homes .

It said that it could "often be impossible" to assess the rebuild value of a listed building without a trained valuer visiting the property.

Laura Wood, spokesperson for NFU Mutual, said: "Care should always be taken when choosing insurance for listed buildings. It is not a one-size fits all approach and owners of listed properties are urged to seek specialist advice and regularly review their insurance arrangements."

The owners of listed buildings need to obtain consent from their local council if they want to make any changes to their property .

Carrying out unauthorised work on a property is a criminal offence punishable by a fine or prison sentence.
