And while the research by Paypal says the average gift will cost around £70, anyone who is planning on giving a more expensive gift might want to make sure they have adequate home insurance .
Direct Line Home Insurance says that, with the average engagement ring at Goldsmiths costing over £1,000, anyone who does not tell their home insurance provider about the new purchase could be in for a nasty surprise if it is lost or stolen.
Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home Insurance, said: "Insurance is probably the last thing on most people's mind when they are showering their loved ones with gifts on Valentine's Day. Having the right cover in place could prevent heartache if the unthinkable happens and that precious item is lost or stolen."
A recent study by Zurich Insurance found that many people living in rented accommodation did not have sufficient contents insurance .
