Anyone who is going on holiday should check their home insurance policy to see if it covers personal possessions outside the home, one expert has said.
Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, explained that if someone's home insurance policy does cover this, then there will be no need to take out separate insurance for baggage .
Mr Crowder said: "If you have this cover, it will include all your property - baggage, camera, personal effects, et cetera. There is therefore no need to include baggage cover if you take out travel insurance, thus reducing the premium, because it is covered by your home [insurance] policy."
However, he did warn that people should check their home insurance policy before they go on holiday to ensure it will cover their possessions if they travel outside of the UK, but he did add that in most cases people will be covered anywhere in the world.
According to research by Gapyear.com 25 per cent of young people do not take out a sufficient level of insurance when travelling, something which could prove costly if the worst was to happen.
