Toddlers adding to home insurance claims, expert notes

Thu, 21 Aug 2008

Terrible toddlers are causing many people to make claims on their house insurance, according to a new study.

Recent research by Abbey highlighted that parents across the UK are spending more than £552 million to repair damage caused by reckless children.

The study also showed that boys are twice as likely to cause damage than their female counterparts, while children between the ages of one and five-years-old caused the most breakages.

Among the most common forms of damage parents have to cope with were marks on paint or wallpaper, damage to furniture and broken ornaments.

Commenting on these findings, Tony Beckwith, head of Santander Insurance UK, said that it is vital people ensure they have the right level of home insurance cover to deal with such incidents.

"We would urge anyone looking after children this summer to try and avoid this by ensuring they have the proper cover on their home insurance, including any additional full accidental damage options," he added.

Meanwhile, insurance provider Halifax recently stated that when looking for home insurance it is not always best to opt for the cheapest as it may not provide the level of cover needed.
