More than a million UK householders have mislaid a set of spare keys, according to research by one home insurance firm .
A survey by Sainsbury's Home Insurance reveals that the average homeowner has four spare sets of keys but that many do not retrieve them after lending them to someone.
Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "Although it's sensible and often necessary to leave a spare set of keys with a trusted person to gain access to your property, it's concerning to see just how many homeowners have completely lost track of who could have access to their home."
Failing to take proper care of keys could invalidate a home insurance policy if someone needed to make a claim, he added.
Yesterday, Age Concern Insurance Services warned people to make sure they keep valuable items secure.
Speaking to the Andover Advertiser, Richard Dorrell, a spokesperson for the charity, suggested that people should also check what is covered under their home insurance policy .
