Home insurance warning over garden items

Mon, 04 Aug 2008

People should make sure that their garden furniture is covered by their home insurance policy, one expert has warned.

Mike Powell, consultant for general insurance at Defaqto, explains that research by the firm shows that 38 per cent of home insurance policies provide £500-worth or less of cover for things kept in the garden .

This means that people could be left out of pocket if they have to make a home insurance claim, he stated.

Mr Powell said: "Consumers do not always consider the true value of their garden and should take care to understand the extent of the cover on offer."

Keen gardeners might also want to make sure that their plants, trees and shrubs are covered by their home insurance policy, he added.

Yesterday, Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, recommended cyclists have a home insurance policy which will pay out if their bike is stolen as the items are popular targets for thieves.
