Home insurance is highly affordable and it should not come down to a choice between a policy and other vital items, one expert has claimed.
Peter Staddon, head of technical services at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, explained that if people are being forced to choose between taking out home insurance for the contents of their property and putting food on the table then their broker is not doing their job properly.
He said: "The broker should be able to say I can find a way I can get you some sort of protection and still put food on the table for the children, because that is the priority."
Mr Staddon added that while it is fine for people not to take out home insurance for the contents in their property, they should be aware that they risk loosing everything if their house is flooded .
According to a survey by Zurich Insurance, around £8 billion worth of goods in rented accommodation is not protected by home insurance.
