Homeowners told to check buildings insurance

Fri, 16 Nov 2007

To coincide with the launch of National Maintenance Week, homeowners are being urged to check their buildings insurance before undertaking any repair work.

Fair Investment Company claimed that recent research revealed that two in three people are unaware that they may have to notify their insurance provider before starting a project.

The firm noted that larger projects such as extensions and loft conversions could mean homeowners are required to take out "small-level" cover to protect their property .

James Caldwell, director of Fair Investment Company, said: "Whether it's knocking down a wall, adding an extension or simply replacing the windows , you could end up out of pocket if you press ahead with the work before informing your insurer ."

In related news, the AA's British Insurance Premium Index recently showed that during the third quarter of the year the average buildings insurance quote rose by three per cent.
