Households are being urged to keep their expensive possessions out of sight of people on the street.
Research conducted by home insurance provider LV= found that 65 per cent of homes across the country have items such as TVs and PCs visible from the street - which could prove inviting for thieves.
Martin Milner, spokesperson for the firm, said that thieves are more likely to target properties that have items on display.
There is a temptation to leave curtains open in December to show off Christmas trees and decorations, Mr Milner suggested.
However, people should ensure they take preventative measures at this time of year to keep their expensive belongings hidden, he advised.
Abbey recently reported that a significant number of people started their Christmas shopping early this year, with 2.9 million choosing to buy gifts in January.
The firm urged people to ensure that their home insurance covers the value of these extra items.
