Home insurance firm in storm warning

Thu, 01 Nov 2007

Britons should batten down the hatches and ensure that their properties are tough enough to withstand the storms that lie ahead this winter, one home insurance firm has claimed.

According to Halifax Home Insurance last year saw £16 million worth of claims due to the weather last year, while November is expected to bring with it driving winds and fierce rain.

The tumultuous winter weather means that UK residents should take a number of precautions both inside the home and without, including checking roof tiles and external lights , while keeping the central heating on to prevent pipes freezing.

Also, home insurance customers are advised to ensure they have an emergency kit at hand in the event of a severe storm.

Vicky Emmott from Halifax Home Insurance says: "With home emergencies , prevention is certainly better than the cure and many claims could be avoided if householders spent a small amount of time preparing for the coming bad weather."

NFU Mutual recent advised UK residents to check their level of home insurance cover in the advent of a winter that could be as unpredictable as the preceding summer.
