Several insurance companies are now telling consumers that unless they buy a safe to store certain items they will not be given cover, according to one expert.
Anthony Neary, managing director of The Safe Shop, said that although purchasing a safe is unlikely to reduce insurance premiums, some insurers are "insisting" that customers buy one.
"Certain customers are told that they must buy a safe otherwise they're not going to give them cover for whatever items they've got there," he remarked.
Typically, this would be people with "excess" amounts of "valuable" possessions, Mr Neary commented.
Additionally, some insurance providers now stipulate which type of safe their customers are required to buy, he added.
According to the Home Office, the majority of burglaries are undertaken by opportunist thieves.
It is estimated that in two in ten burglaries, thieves did not have to use force to gain entry but were able to go through open doors or windows .
