A home insurance company has discovered that one in five people have converted little-used spaces around their property.
According to a survey from financial services provider AA Home Insurance, 20 per cent of homeowners admit they have converted parts of their property, with a loft conversion being the most popular option.
Moreover, the home insurance provider has revealed that more conversions involve the creation of a family bedroom than anything else, followed by preparing a guest bedroom and developing a study.
Commenting on the findings, Janet Pell, head of home insurance at AA Insurance, has reminded homeowners about the importance of arranging home insurance cover for any changes.
Make sure you update your home insurance cover following an extension of conversion - your three-bed cottage might suddenly become a four-bed house - and of course you'll have additional furniture and possessions, she said.
Many home insurance customers may have been inspired to convert parts of their property after watching home improvements programmes on TV.
For instance, Channel 4's Grand Designs and BBC's Changing Rooms regularly show homeowners building and redesigning their properties.
