Botched DIY could invalidate home insurance, expert warns

Thu, 22 Mar 2007

Homeowners have been warned their DIY plans could potentially invalidate their home insurance policy.

According to research from financial services provider Halifax Home Insurance, 46 per cent of the UK's population would like to make over their properties at some point in the future.

More specifically, 26 per cent of these DIY enthusiasts intend to landscape their gardens, while 15 per cent want to revamp their bedrooms and 14 per cent would like to redesign their kitchens.

However, the home insurance provider points out that 22 per cent of British people do not have home contents insurance protection and 36 per cent have failed to take out buildings insurance cover.

And Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, has warned that some home insurance policyholders may also not receive financing assistance if they accidentally damage their properties.

"Trying to tackle certain areas that you are not qualified for, such as electrics or plumbing, could invalidate your home insurance and leave you liable for the cost of any subsequent damage," she said.

Earlier this month, Halifax's home insurance division urged homeowner's insurance policyholders to insulate garden plants with horticultural fleece in order to minimise the risk of needing to make a claim after cold weather.
