Thousands of householders may be forced to make claims on their home insurance policies this year as a result of DIY work going wrong, according to new research
In a new survey from home insurance specialist Churchill, one in five people confessed to having caused damage to their property or the items inside it as a result of their DIY misadventures.
And the homeowner's insurance provider points out that the cost of repairs can potentially run into hundreds of pounds.
According to the home insurance company, the average accidental claim on a home insurance deal is for £540.
Consequently, Churchill Home Insurance's head Martin Scott has urged DIY enthusiasts to look closely at their homeowner's insurance policy before getting started.
"Householders who have elected to include accidental damage cover under their home insurance policy have the added reassurance that they are covered if a DIY accident causes damage in the home," he said.
Earlier this month, Abbey Home Insurance warned customers to be wary of additional charges levied by some home insurance companies.
Its research indicated that 44 per cent of the UK's home contents insurance policies now charge extra for direct debit payments.
