Lock up garden valuables, home insurance specialist warns

Thu, 21 Jun 2007

More than half of homeowners in the UK may be overlooking the importance of locking up valuable items outside their property such as outdoor furniture or specialist gardening tools, according to a new home insurance study.

Research from financial services provider esure indicates that 52 per cent of people have never considered taking steps to increase the security of their gardens, which could potentially open the door to opportunist thieves.

Meanwhile, a further six per cent of homeowners confess that, while they would like to improve their external security arrangements, they have not actually changed anything so far.

Commenting on the findings, Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at the financial services provider, has stressed the importance of protecting the exterior of a property as well as the interior.

"It is imperative that everyone should get in to the habit of safely tidying away and locking up their garden gear while also taking reasonable care of securing their household perimeters," she said.

In related home insurance news, financial services company Halifax Home Insurance recently revealed that one in four Britons have lied to their partners about the actual cost of items they have bought.
