Garden insurance is needed, says expert

Tue, 24 Jul 2007

Homeowners who have invested in expensive garden furniture this summer are being warned to protect their outdoor valuables against thieves by taking out a good home insurance policy.

American Express Insurance Services are advising consumers to make sure their garden items are insured against theft, as it is predicted by some home insurance providers that one in seven objects will go missing.

Marketing manager for American Express Insurance Services Joanne Field advises that some home insurance policies will only cover outdoor furniture that is locked up.

"We recognise that it is not practical for homeowners to lock away their garden furniture and equipment each night. The best defence against thieves is a good insurance policy and we offer our customers comprehensive protection," she remarked.

The gardening industry is worth £100 million per week with 62 per cent of homeowners possessing a garden table and a set of chairs, worth an average £248. Only eight per cent of consumers own the most expensive garden item, a trampoline.

Yesterday consumers were advised to check their home insurance policies as a fifth of all home insurance claims are made during the school holidays as children run wild in family abodes.
