More than a third of UK homeowners believe their neighbourhoods are getting progressively worse, according to the findings of new research from a home insurance provider.
A survey from Churchill Home Insurance has found that 36 per cent of householders think their neighbourhoods are in a worse state now than ten years ago.
And this has been reflected in the willingness of people to help out their neighbours, the home insurance specialist has suggested.
According to the poll, 72 per cent of homeowners would not come out to help if a neighbour's burglar alarm sounded, potentially meaning that some thieves escape unchallenged and victims can only resort to making a claim on their home insurance policy.
Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance, suggested that changing social habits were behind the results.
"Social trends such as longer working hours and commuting longer distances, people moving home more frequently and families enjoying more sedentary leisure activities within the home can affect the relationships that we hold with our neighbours," he said.
When a householder relocates, one of the financial services that may need to be arranged is home contents insurance cover.
This ensures that if the house is burgled, they should be entitled to compensation for some of the items taken.
