Consumers urged to insure their handbags

Fri, 14 Dec 2007

With the value of the contents of a woman's handbag and the bag itself "easily" worth £1,500, one insurance company has urged people to make sure they have adequate cover .

According to research by Legal and General, both men and women can be carrying around expensive bags containing valuable items and should check whether their home insurance policy covers their possession.

Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal and General's general insurance business, said that it can be "surprising" how much people carry around with them and thus may be "extremely upsetting" if these items are stolen.

"So rather than realise that you are not insured we suggest people check that they have cover now and that it is adequate to cover the cost of replacement," she advised.

Earlier this month, Sainsbury's reported that 21.9 million people have chosen not to buy at least one insurance product, with 13 per cent citing the expense as their main reason for doing so.
