Residents in Newport are picking up the pieces after a blaze broke out at a joinery workshop and destroyed nine homes, it has been reported.
However, many of the affected homeowners did not have home insurance , such as Walia and Fatima Dad who have lived in the property for 30 years and have spent a lot of money improving their home, the BBC has noted.
Mr Dad commented to the news source: "We had a new roof , new windows, new central heating, new sofas ."
"It's awful, a real tragedy what has happened and so many people haven't got insurance ," Irene Livingstone, a neighbour of the Dads, remarked.
A spokesperson for the local council has declared the authority will support the victims of the fire commenting: "We are providing any help we can."
The news follows warnings by financial services companies to householders to check their home insurance policies , particularly if they live in a flood affected areas. Halifax has also advised homeowners to check their policies cover theft of house contents outside of the home, as picnics can provide opportunities for thieves to steal valuable possessions.
