Students have been warned to ensure that they have adequate home insurance when they head off to university.
Concerns have been raised as more students are now living in private accommodation, rather than halls of residence, which could put them at a higher risk of burglary, claims Sainsbury's Bank.
Students without home insurance could risk losing thousands of pounds of expensive items if they do not have correct home insurance cover.
The bank states that although 30,000 students could be at risk of burglary, many parents with home insurance could extend their cover to children living away, therefore lessening the risk of losing items.
Robert O'May, home insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank said: Student belongings can be worth thousands of pounds so insurance is a necessity not a luxury.
Sadly, because of the financial challenges many students face, some may decide against taking out home insurance for their belongings, which is a false economy.
Barclays recently warned students not to be lazy and ensure that they have adequate home insurance for their belongings.
