Home insurance warning over severe weather

Fri, 01 Sep 2006

Severe weather predicted in the coming months could cause damage to properties, a home insurance provider has warned.

Climate change will make incidents of flood and severe storms more commonplace, possibly resulting in a home insurance claim, Liverpool Victoria has warned.

However, the company has provided policyholders with guidelines, to ensure that a home insurance claim will be processed as quickly as possible.

Tips include keeping personal documents, such as bank details and home insurance policies in a safe, dry place, maintaining a list of all of the main contents and their replacement value, and photographing major items to prove ownership.

Nigel Snell, Liverpool Victoria's corporate communications director, said. "We all know how climate change is affecting the weather, but off the back of a long, dry summer, we’d urge people not to take the weather for granted.

"They shouldn’t forget to prepare for the increasingly common flash floods which now seem to take place with increasing frequency."

Home insurance provider Churchill recently warned that every UK household suffers six disasters over the course of a lifetime.
