Students have been warned not to be "lazy" when it comes to home insurance.
Many young adults leaving for university may be putting themselves at risk by not taking out a home insurance policy, claims Barclays.
Furthermore, adults between the ages of 16 and 24 are the victims of burglary more than any other demographic, the bank's research shows, which could leave them severely out of pocket without home insurance.
Mark Till, marketing director for Barclays Insurance, said: "Insurance is one of the absolute essentials for all students, yet so many neglect to take it out.
"Many students may be concerned that on a tight budget insurance is an additional cost they can manage without, but students' possessions nowadays are of an incredibly high value."
Mr Till cites hi-tech items such as digital cameras, laptops, MP3 players and mobile phones, which are found in most student homes, along with other items like TVs, sunglasses, money and credit cards.
However, an analyst at Moneysupermarket.com recently reminded parents that in many cases their home insurance policy could cover a student's valuables while living away from home.
