Some sheds need insurance, expert claims

Fri, 20 Oct 2006

Many Britons are using their shed for more than just storage, possibly meaning that they need to be adequately covered by a home insurance policy, an expert has claimed.

Some 24 per cent of Britons have paid in excess of £300 for their shed, which means that they could be out of pocket if it is damaged and not covered by an insurance policy, according to Saga Insurance.

The insurance group also stated that one in ten UK residents are using their shed as a home office, rather than just storing garden implements.

Other uses for a shed include hot tubs and spas, changing rooms for swimming pools, yoga and space for "secret liaisons", the home insurance company claimed.

Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga, commented: "There are many ways to make the most of the extra space that sheds can offer without being restricted to using them just for storage.

"But whatever you use your shed for, it is important that you consider protecting it and its contents against theft or damage."

The Kenilworth Weekly news reports that gardeners were distraught after vandals broken into 15 sheds in the area, smashing glass and damaging property.
