Pest insurance to protect homes against wasp dangers

Fri, 05 May 2006

With the warm weather approaching, wasps will soon be out in force annoying people trying to enjoy picnics and barbeques, but few will realise the pest can also affect their home insurance.

Pests such as wasps building their nests can cause structural damage to a property leading to long-term expense for homeowners, forcing them to make possible insurance claims. An undisturbed nest can become the home to over 25,000 wasps.

Homeowners could also be caught out during the summer by the expensive process of calling a pest control agency to remove a nest.

To help cover these unexpected costs, the insurance company esure claims to be the first company to launch its own pest insurance cover.

This insurance policy aims to give homeowners peace of mind that a qualified pest controller will be called in to remove the nest.

It also hopes to encourage homeowners to feel more inclined to deal with a pest problem immediately, therefore avoiding long-term expense.

Nikki Sellers from the home insurance company says immediate action is essential when dealing with wasps this summer.

"During the spring bug season homeowners should not delay in seeking professional advice if they notice any wasp activity - or the beginnings of a nest - in their home or garden," she advised.

She added that homeowners should never try and remove a nest themselves, but be aware that without pest cover they could have to fork out for an expensive bill.
