New home insurance flood warnings

Thu, 25 May 2006

Flooding incidents are increasing, putting individuals without home insurance at risk, according to experts.

Insurance provider More Than warns that the overdevelopment of land and the antiquated drainage system in the UK could lead to increased incidents of flooding in the future, possibly causing problems for homeowners not covered by home insurance.

Jon Sellors, spokesperson for More Than, has commented on the possible outcomes of increased flooding on home insurance.

"You don't need extra cover for flooding, but if you are in an area that is prone to this type of event you may pay more for it. We have been pushing for increased flood defences … if this doesn't happen, the worst case scenario is that households will be unable to get cover."

Mr Sellors also offered advice to victims of flooding, which includes keeping a wind-up torch, warm clothes and important home insurance policy documents safe.

The environment, food and rural affairs select committee has recently acknowledged that funding for flood defences needs to increase to £1 billion in the long-term to take account of climate change.
