Home insurance claims process should be scrutinised

Tue, 30 May 2006

Top UK Home Insurance providers urge consumers to study the claims process to be made if the worst should happen in the home .

Independent advisor Brian Brown commented that: "with some [insurance companies] you have to report all claims within 24 hours and some companies stick to this to the second".

He urged consumers to study the claims process before going on to choose a policy as requirements can differ vastly between insurance companies . For example, some insurance companies would require the customer to produce "a copy of the exact receipt" before paying out compensation .

In the incident of a household item being lost, some home insurance providers would require customers to report the incident to police before filing for an insurance claim . In many instances, making a home insurance claim will also incur a standard excess fee. Often such details are hidden in the small print of insurance policies.
