Fear of crime could boost need for insurance, reveals survey

Thu, 11 May 2006

Almost 50 per cent of Brits are worried about being a victim of crime, which could see more people looking to insurance policies for peace of mind, reveals a survey.

According to the insurance company Legal &General, 26 million Brits are concerned about crime levels. It found that 55 per cent of people have been worried about criminal activity in the last three months and almost half of these have had first-hand experience of crime, whether it was as a victim or a witness.

Elaine Parkes from the insurance company says to combat this fear of crime, it is vital that people take basic precautions such as keeping valuables out of sight.

She also urged that men needed to be just as cautious as women, with males actually more likely to be a victim or witness to crime than women.

"Although women are typically encouraged to be more cautious when it comes to avoiding crime, men are feeling increasingly threatened, highlighting a need for men to be more aware about their personal safety," she said.

A good home insurance policy that also provides insurance for valuable goods taken outside the home can also provide greater peace of mind for concerned people.
