Foreign I do's on the up, insurance company finds

Wed, 15 Mar 2006

Almost one in four British couples who tied the knot in the last two years opted for a destination wedding, according to new research by an insurance company.

Direct Line Home Insurance revealed that 24 per cent of British newlyweds married abroad, with their nuptials costing them £1.7 billion collectively.

The insurance company says that over the last decade overseas weddings have increased by 15 per cent.

South Africa proved to be the most popular destination for walking down the aisle on foreign soil, followed by St Lucia, Mauritius, Las Vegas and Antigua, according to the insurance company.

"Affordable airfares, a sense of adventure and the drudgery of British weather mean that overseas weddings are more popular than they have ever been," comments Simon Ziviani, a spokesperson for Direct Line Home Insurance.

"It's great that couples are choosing to reward themselves in this way, but it's also extremely important that they make sure that their home contents are fully covered before they jet off."

The insurance company found that two per cent of newlyweds came back to Britain only to find that they had been burgled, with 15 per cent losing wedding gifts they had received before jetting off to get married.

Mr Ziviani says that 48 per cent of newlyweds fail to re-assess their home contents insurance when they become husband and wife.

"This is very unwise and means that many couples may receive a nasty surprise when they return from their dream wedding to find they have been burgled," he concludes.
