Home insurance should be a last resort in the event of a burglary and steps can be taken to ensure there is less likelihood of one occurring, experts advise.
Norwich Union, which provides home insurance, travel insurance and car insurance, as well as personal loans and investments, has advised UK homeowners not to leave keys lying around.
The 2006 Cash for Keys Report, compiled by Norwich Union insurance, shows that 80 per cent of Brits have up to five sets of keys in their home, with half keeping them all in one place, while 12 per cent put labels on keys, giving thieves a helping hand and possibly resulting in a hefty home insurance claim.
Ex-burglar, Bob Turney, who was a criminal for 18 years before becoming a probation officer, offered advice to UK residents: "The most obvious places to keep keys are the worst places, yet Brits continue to use them without much consideration for how easy they are making it for burglars."
Norwich Union also urges UK residents to ensure their home insurance policies sufficiently cover all of the goods in their house.
Meanwhile, home insurance experts Insuresupermarket recently advised UK homeowners not to leave windows open in the summer months, as this is another possible way of allowing thieves easy access to goods.
