There is no insurance against a broken heart, says AA Insurance, but those planning to pop the question on a foreign break this Valentine's Day need to ensure they have extended home insurance in place to cover engagement rings.
Research by the insurance company reveals that almost a third of couples that go on a holiday abroad in February are likely to come back as betrothed pairs.
Getting engaged abroad is "definitely a growing trend", comments the managing director of AA Insurance Kevin Sinclair.
"And with so many diamond rings being nervously carried in pockets, jewellery can easily be lost, damaged or even stolen," he warns.
However, home insurance cover could be extended to include jewellery anywhere in the world, Mr Sinclair points out.
"If you've spent a small fortune on a ring, you can at least cover that cost if it all goes wrong – even if you can't insure against a broken heart," he says.
AA Insurance found that over 100,000 people who went down on bended knee on foreign soil had their offers of marital bliss declined, costing them an average £1,165 for holiday expenses and the ring.
