Many UK residents could be putting themselves or their belongings at risk by leaving windows open in the summer months, according to Tesco home insurance.
Some 80 per cent of UK homeowners admitted to being less security conscious during the summer months, possibly leading to hefty home insurance claims.
Almost one third of respondents to the study, conducted by Tesco home insurance, stated that they left a window open all day, while 20 per cent claimed to have left patio doors open.
Allan Burns, head of Tesco home insurance, comments: It's understandable that people want to keep their homes as cool as possible during this heatwave.
However, it's important to remember that burglars aren't any less opportunistic during the summer months than at any other time of the year.
Mr Burns adds that home insurance providers expect residents to take precautions to protect their property and insurance claims could be rejected if windows have been left open.
Meanwhile, recent research by Halifax indicated that the number of children playing sports in summer could lead to broken windows and therefore home insurance claims.
