Check home insurance to cover DIY disasters

Tue, 11 Apr 2006

Many DIY enthusiasts will be looking forward to the long Easter weekend and hoping to do a spot of home improvement, however a home insurance provider urges them to first check their home insurance policy .

Too often efforts to fit a new kitchen or decorate the bedroom can have disastrous consequences, with paint being split on carpets or water pipes bursting. In these worst-case scenarios, online home insurance provider insuresupermarket says that an adequate insurance policy is vital.

According to Richard Mason, director of the insurance website, insurance for accidental damage to a home can cost as little as £22.

At a relatively small cost, homeowners can ensure they are adequately covered for serious and potentially expensive DIY blunders, such as drilling through a water pipe and letting water leak into the neighbour's house .

He also adds that shopping around for the best insurance deal is advisable as home insurance costs can vary and one insurer can sometimes be more than three times more expensive than another.

However, other home improvement jobs could have a positive impact on the cost of your home insurance policy. For example, fitting a smoke alarm or ensuring security features such as locks on windows and gates are up to scratch could lower the cost of your home insurance policy by as much as ten per cent.
