Students urged to take out home insurance

Wed, 14 Sep 2005

New university students are starting the year with concerns about studies, essays and exams, but burglaries have been flagged up as another cause of worry for university entrants.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) warned students that an estimated 38,500 of them could become the victims of burglaries during the time they will be spending at university.

And with expensive goods worth thousands of pounds found in average student households, the average burglary is estimated to amount to damage of around £900.

The BIBA said that this highlights the need for home insurance for students.

"Students have a number of valuable items and generally own more expensive consumer goods per head than the rest of the population," commented Peter Staddon, head of technical services at the BIBA.

"However, with the growing cost of being a student, we are concerned that it is becoming increasingly tempting for students to try and save some money by not insuring their belongings."

Calling this a false economy, Mr Staddon pointed out the more than a tenth off students will become victims of burglary during their years as university students.

And as many students' possessions are not automatically covered by their parents' home insurance policies, they are urged to take out their own home insurance cover.
