Insurer Cornhill Direct has advised people to check their home insurance policy this Christmas to ensure they are fully covered.
The insurance company states that its own insurance policy increases its home contents cover during the festive period to take into account presents that people keep in the home.
As such, Cornhill states that people should think back to presents bought in previous years and their total cost to help them determine whether or not they have adequate insurance this Christmas.
Ian Firth, operating underwriting manager at Cornhill Direct, said: Over time, people can lose track of just how much the value of the contents in their home has increased so perhaps a 'must do' in the new year is to check with their insurers that they are adequately covered.
Mr Firth also said that Brits will spend £14.7 billion on presents, which increases the total value of items being kept in the home by around £600.
The manager's comments come on the back of research from the insurance company that shows many people actually keep gifts they buy for other people because they like them too much to give away.
