Home insurance not covering thieves' windows of opportunity

Mon, 08 Aug 2005

Open doors and windows in the summer create a window of opportunity for opportunistic thieves to help themselves to homeowners' possessions, Halifax Home Insurance warned.

The home insurance provider said insurance claims for unforced burglaries soar by a fifth in summer months, but that many home insurance policies will not cover these.

Because home insurance policies stipulate that homeowners should demonstrate reasonable care. Therefore insurance claims for stolen handbags, car keys, mobile phones and jewellery snatched because a door or window was left open, are not always covered by home insurance policies.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter for Halifax Home Insurance, noted that burglars could be in and out of a property in a matter of minutes, often while unsuspecting occupiers are sitting in the garden or watching television in another room.

"Unfortunately those that don’t keep home security at the forefront of their mind may find that they are not covered for any resulting stolen items," she warned.

Homeowners in the North are most frequently the targets of thieves. East Anglian homeowners make the highest home insurance claims, the average cost exceeding £650.
