Keeping your shed / garage safe

Garages

Most garages are no longer just used for storing cars or motorbikes. Many people now use their garage as a workshop or an extension of their shed storing push bikes, DIY power tools and sporting equipment. Considering the value of the property contained inside, is it worth over the policy excess? If the answer is yes then you need to look at some security precautions. We recommend getting a lock for either side of the door. Look at fitting an alarm, Screwfix supply a range of garage and shed alarms for around £20. Burglars often identify garages and sheds as easy targets.

If you already have a burglar alarm system, contact your fitter and ask them how much it would cost to extend the coverage to the garage?

Garden Sheds

Again look at your shed, is the contents more than the excess on your insurance policy and what does your insurance policy cover you for? There are so many valuable things in a shed from mowers, strimmers, cycles and power tools etc. The contents of your shed can often run to thousands of pounds. So we recommend you secure the shed door with at least one heavy-duty lock and closed-shackle padlock. Better still fit one to both sides so the burglar cannot just undo the hinge screws and get in.

The biggest thing to remember is that vulnerable sheds provide the burglars with a endless supply of house breaking tools, e.g. the very versatile garden spade, because of the blade size and the leverage that can be exerted, very few doors and windows can withstand an attack from them. If the shed is too fragile to secure adequately, the spade should either be bolted or padlocked to a heavy bench or frame, or, better still, kept in a more secure place such as a locked garage. Alternatively, your tools can be secured by chaining them together.
